I have secured a place to leave my Hobie 16 on the beach. I have always trailered it. Any thoughts about the need to tie it down. The beach has west and Northwest exposure which is the direction from which fronts and thunderstorms clear through. I'm thinking that a strong squall/t-storm will toss the boat around - they only weigh 350 lbs. and the tramp is enough area for a strong gust to lift/toss the boat. It's a sandy beach and I figured I could simply bury a tire or cinder block with a rope attached. Tie-off would probably be the front crossbar. I might put two anchors in to secure off of the rear crossbar as well. Thoughts? Thanks |

I'll start by saying anything is better than nothing. The screw-in anchors should work, definitely get at least two. I keep my boat on the beach and use cinder blocks buried in the sand with a length of galvanized chain wrapped through the blocks and then tie some old mainsheet lines to the chain. I use two anchor points at each forward pylon and a third on the aft crossbar that I use when storing longer-term. It's probably overkill, but the anchors are cheap insurance against unexpected severe storms. |

With the H16 one anchor tied to the dolphin striker under the mast is sufficient. Just get the bigger/longer anchor. One big anchor has way more holding force than several smaller ones. |

I’ll echo what others have said... When I stored my boat on the beach, I used two anchor lines, one around the front crossbar and one around the rear crossbar. I used cinderblocks as anchors buried in the sand a few feet down. The boat never moved, even during strong nor’easters. sm |

I bury a tire about 4' down and use a dock line running the line around the tire and through the loop at the end. I run the line through a small plastic orange cone and knot it to keep the cone in place. The cone keeps the line from getting buried. I then secure the boat to the line at the dolphin striker. I leave some slack on the line so the boat can float if the water comes up at high tide overnight. I also only attach at one point so the boat can pivot with the tide and not experience any undue stress due to positioning relative to the water's movement. This is what I was taught by the old heads on my beach. |

This year, instead of using a cinder block, I drilled a hole through a foot long piece of pressure treated 4x4 and tied my anchor line to that. It seems plenty secure buried a couple feet down in the sand and was a lot easier to lug to the beach than a cinder block. sm |

This year I'm switching from my tire setup to 2 pressure treated pieces of wood (2x10 about 2.5' long) with a hole in the center for the line to go through. |

The method described by bloome is basically how they store boats at a club I often visit on our Gulf Coast. However, I strongly recommend that you tie the anchor line around the front crossbar (not dolphin striker which is much easier to bend). Also, polypropylene line won't last long in the sun. |
