| Post subject: | Tie down on the beach |
I keep my Hobie 16 on the beach all summer. I may be lucky but I don’t tie it down. I hear stories of boat falling over and drifting away. What is the best way to tie down the boat and what do I attach to? Do I go to the Dolphin striker or around the tramp frame? Bill |

If by "beach" you mean actual sand, I'd bury 2 or 4 large flat somethings (pieces of wood, metal, whatever) about 18 inches down with ropes tied to them that terminate above the sand. Tie something small, but floatie to each line. Then when you're lashing down the boat for the night, take a line to each end of the front cross bar. Or to all four corners of the tramp if you're in an area prone to the kind of boomer storms we get in Texas. If your "beach" is actually dirt, I'd use 2 or 4 auger type dog stakes. Brian C |

yea I thought I didnt need to tie down my H 16 and ended up with a bent mast to show for it. That was on the shore of Lake Huron. A $1000 lesson from Mother Nature. |

If people store their boats on the trailer with the mast up, we encourage them to use tie-downs in that situation also. We make money every year replacing masts on storm tossed boats... And we'd rather not. Brian C |

Hey there. I had my Hobie 16 on the beach at FWBYC for the first 10 years. Even made it through 2 hurricanes. OH to be young and stupid... Anyway. I went to a place that sold sand anchors for trailers (a.k.a. single and double wides) and got three 4 foot sand anchors. These were cool because the auger plate at the base was larger than the usual little 3" wide ones on the other sand anchors I found. I put two on the outside of the hulls at the rear crossbar, and then one right below the front mast step. Three very strong anchor points did the trick for me. Many other cat's blew off that beach in storm, but I was lucky. None ever hit mine, and she never moved. Enjoy! |
