| Post subject: | Hobie 16 Hull creak |
So I got the boat all tuned up the season, had a couple great sails, then the derecho storm June 29 deposited a large limb on my port hull and sidebar. Crunch! I found nearby and bought an oldie (1984) with solid hulls, no soft spots for parts and replaced the hull and side bar. Put it all together, tightened the tramp, and then lifted the hulls to test for stiffness. The boat seems decently stiff, but the "new" port hull creaks whenever I lift and lower it. At first I thought the creak might be the pylon, but it is definitely coming from INSIDE the hull. I talked to someone who just told me that lots of hulls creak, but I am concerned that I cannot see the cause. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with this? Has the pylon structure possibly separated from the hull inside? Has anyone seen a hull fail for this reason? Thanks for any input. |

Hard to say for sure without seeing in person, but my initial thoughts would be either the pylon/crossbars creaking around in the corner castings as the boat flexes, or if the sound is truely coming from inside the hull, then probably the pylon shoe moving around. Can you have someone put their ear against the hull and/or put their hands on the sides of the hull while you lift the bow up and down to listen/feel if the bottom of the pylon is moving around? Also look for a bulge or cracks down at the base of the pylon. You could also cut a hole and install an inspection port in the deck to allow you to look inside the hull. This isn’t a bad idea to do anyway since it will allow the hull to air out (composites don’t like continuous exposure to moisture). You don’t say which pylon is the problem, but if it’s the front pylon and you go the inspection port route, I would recommend putting the port behind the pylon (not in front). sm |
