Post subject:  Setup Questions

Hi All,

Getting started with a 1970 Hobie 16 in decent condition. Don't want to overwhelm you with questions, though I have many!

Here are three:

(1) Note the Harken Block in the picture attached. Isn't there supposed to be a vertical pin coming through the top hole?
If so, I can't find anywhere to purchase said pin...do you have any suggestions?

If it can't be purchased, can two shackles (one attached through the horizontal holes) be used to provide some rotation? Or is a snap shackle that swivels OK?

(2) There are two Tiller Connector kits available - one "Original" with rubber grommets and one "Regular" with a plastic washer. What applications do these fit and why would you choose one over the other?

My boat currently has the "Regular" style, but things are quite loose and it seems like the rubber pads/grommets might tighten things up...

(3) My boat has the older white rudder locking "plunger" (the part that sits on top of the spring). Are the new black ones different/better?

(I did try the Search function...)

Thanks much!

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I'm pretty new here so I'm not the authority by any means. But I didn't get a lot of answers to my questions so I'll contribute what I can. My '77 also has the white plunger and it works fine. I replaced both rudder cams as one was broken. Greased them up and the rudders seemed to kick up easy by hand, but they stayed down in the water.

I couldn't see your pictures but I don't know anything about the Harken blocks anyway. I've got seaways.

1) Can’t view your link. But if you’re talking about the upper mainsheet block, there should be a vertical pin coming out of the top of the block. That pin has a hole through it to accept a 3/16” or 1/4” shackle pin. Shackle the block directly to the boom bale.

2) The basic tiller connector kit has two contoured spacers that seat against the tiller arm and tiller crossbar end caps. Then a 1/4” bolt passes through and is tensioned with a spring and nut. The spring allows some flexibility in the system.

The higher end kit is the Hobie 20 style connector, which is probably overkill for a 1970’s Hobie 16.

3) The white plunger should be fine as long as its in good shape and the rudder system is engaging and disengaging properly.

Thanks for the responses guys, much appreciated. I will have to work on my picture uploading skills!

You got it right srm, and your comments confirm to me that I am missing the vertical pin. I will have to try to find a used one somewhere.

On the tiller connector, there is the version you showed at Murray’s, and also this one, with a flat washer.

here

(It’s not the miracle 20 style, big bucks there!)

I’ll stick with the white connector.

Thanks, Jeff

It’s worth the couple extra bucks to get the tiller connectors that I showed with the contoured bushings. The system will operate more smoothly and the plastic parts will last longer.

10-4, that's what I needed to know!
