Post subject:  Individual hull weight

I found an old post stating that the individual hull weight of a H-16 should be in the range of 83 to 90 pounds. Correct?

I'm starting a resto of a new to me 1981 - sail number 58573. I did a quick weight check of the port hull using a bathroom scale - 120 pounds. There has been no major damage that I can see (not full of excess fiberglass and bondo) 30 pounds of water is approx 3.6 gallons.

The boat has not been sailed since 2019. I would guess that the boat was stored outside.

Is it possible that the hull is holding that much water or do I need a better weighing technique?

Hulls older than 1984 are heavier. There was a change in 1984 to lower the class weight of the 16 from 340 to 320.

From the web:

Quote:

In the mid-'70s, the class rule minimum weight was changed to 340 lb. to more accurately reflect the weight of the boats. In 1984, a new manuafacturing process allowed a significant weight reduction to 320 lb. and the class rules were changed accordingly.Sep 30, 2021

I destroyed a hull on my old cheap '77. I bought a replacement '78 H16, and after sailing it a few times found one of the hulls had a leak and a hole in the bottom. The prior owner had repaired the hull with Bondo. That hull weighed 128 lbs and was a real dog. The other hull from the '78 was 101 lbs. The good hull from the '77 was 85 lbs. Right now I am sailing on the 85 and 101 lb hull.

Unless you are racing, I wouldn’t care about hull weight. Tuning your rig and rudders are what I’d focus on.
