| Post subject: | Mast Head loose |
I have an '82 16 with the original 1 piece mast. Took it out for a sail today and when I lowered the mast the casting for the top pulley is a bit loose. Can anyone point me to a good diagram/picture of that assembly so I can figure out what is the exact problem? |

The mast head casting just has a male section that slips into the mast extrusion. The casting is held in with two 3/16” rivets. I would start by drilling out and replacing the rivets. If that doesn’t tighten it up, you could drill two additional holes and add two more rivets. Another option would be to “bed” the upper casting using a thickened epoxy like Marine Tex. It may have gotten sloppy from repeatedly rocking back and forth during raising and lowering the sail. The epoxy would fill any gaps between the extrusion and casting. sm |

srm is right. I would take the opportunity to do a complete refit. Drill out the old rivets and clean up both the casting and mast interior. Remove any old foam mast plug (meant to help keep water out if capsized). Glue in new mast plug, then glue on or use good sealant, and rivet casting in place. Check to make sure the old rivets haven't hogged out the mast. You might have to fill these holes and drill new holes to rivet on casting. |
