I recently purchased a mid 70's H16. I have sailed it several times and found it difficult to get the jib halyard tight enough to take pressure off the forestay. After looking at some manuals I realized that I am missing the Downhaul block and Downhaul cheek block for the Jib. I just replaced the standing rigging including a new "longer" forestay and now I find that the mast rake is too much and I am experiencing significant weather helm. If I replace the downhaul block and cheek block should that decrease the rake or should I find a forestay that is the same length as my old one? I have also looked into an Aussie jib system. Could someone explain this to me and will it be a good upgrade for my boat? Thanks for your help. |

The longer forestay would not be an issue with proper jib halyard tension. The forestay is only used when the jib is not hoisted. Get the cheek block mounted on the side of the mast. Use the multi purchase on the halyard designed into the boat and get that forestay tight! |

If you are going to have to spend $, buy the Aussie Halyard as it will kill two birds with one stone. Less pressure on the mast (bends more true) as the 3-1 is at the head of the sail and this eliminates the need for the cheek block. Buy this from your local dealer if possible. Keep them in business and stocked with product that moves. |
