If you've got enough bodies, anything is possible.

Having done it, I really don't recommend it. It's real easy for the mast to get away from you when it's not fastened via the step link. And something that long coming down uncontrolled will ruin someone's day.

Tie the mast base to the dolphin striker. Best to have the base held in place while stepping (lifting), when de-rigging, tie it tight, and lower carefully, at some point the mast will lift off the base and drop quick untill it hits the tied line. Either way, don't let anyone stand under the mast of behind the boat.

I agree, use the step it is easier.

On Memorial day, while stepping my mast, the base which was linked, separated from the mast at about 3/4 fully stepped. One of the members grabbed the base of the mast and held it in place until we got it all the way up.

To take it down, we laid the boat on its side and disconnected the upper shroud and everybody was safe.

If your mast base and your mast step both still have the holes for the mast link it is possible to use a loop of HEAVY insulated wire that will just fit nicely in the holes made for the mast step kit instead of a mast step kit.
You have to make sure that the wire is not looped too tight or it will rip the mast base off of the mast when you try to step the mast, it happened to me once.
This is basically an emergency technique, and I wouldn't use the wire more than about 5 to10 times before replacing it.
Remember using this technique is done at your own risk.
I would recommend buying the mast step kit asap, it makes it so much easier.
