Post subject:  Broken Shroud Anchor Pin

I went sailing yesterday after work on my H16 and the shroud pin sheared off dropping the mast and ripping my main sail. Anyone else had this happen? The pin was not corroded and is solid stainless. Winds were only 13-15 kts. Luckily a guy came along and towed me to the beach.

Happened to me 2 miles off shore. Had to swim the boat over to a shrimp boat until a friend could come get me with a jet ski. Thankfully the shrimp boat saw it happen an called it in. Had to wait out a large thunder storm. Since then I added 2 additional shroud lines so if 1 breaks or a chain plate breaks or a anchor pin breaks. I have heard of quite a few anchor pins breaking.

This is a part that sees tremendous loads. Especially if the rig is loose or mast up storage. There is an impact load. All fittings should be inspected from time to time. Just like shrouds all mast fittings should be replaced at some point.

Coral Reefer, "Since then I added 2 additional shroud lines so if 1 breaks or a chain plate breaks or a anchor pin breaks."

How does adding an additional shroud on each side prevents dropping the mast and rig when an anchor pin breaks?

There is only one anchor point on each gunwale... or have u drilled the gunwale to install and additional tbar, anchor pin, chainplate and wire??

Does it feel crowded having 4 shrouds and 4 trap wires?

How far back from the stock anchor points did u drill for the additional ones?

Second bar and pin drilled about 2" to the rear of original( rear end of front bar to front end of second bar). Actually the space between the 2 shrouds makes for a nice back rest for a rider. Normally I just move all trap lines up to second shroud. Never been an issue as far as room.
