Is is possible to use a non-comptip main haylard on a comptip mast? I'd like the ability to reef the sail and the non-comptip halyard is about 1/2 the price. I understand that using an all metal haylard will negate the the comptip and I accept this responsibilty. |

The distance between the halyard shackle and the metal “slug” is not the same on the two halyards. The distance is about 3-1/2” longer on the non-comptip halyard, meaning your sail would not hoist all the way to the top of the mast. You could potentially address this by relocating the halyard hook about 3-1/2” farther down the mast. I think one of the issues with reefing a comptip would also be that the head of the mainsail may want to pull out of the plastic luff track. The plastic tracks are flexible, and the H16 mast relies on the halyard having a slightly forward angle when fully hoisted to help hold the head of the sail into the track. At a lower hoist, there won’t be any forward pull at the head of the sail and the plastic track may spread open, allowing the head of the sail to pop out when you sheet in. sm |

Thanks - looks like I'm locked into the Comptip haylard |
