I posted a bit earlier (although it hasn't been posted yet as a new user I guess) about replacing my broken 1974 H16's hulls with some slightly newer ones (still trying to get a handle on how old). When did the "rake" on the mast change? And, so, I'm wondering, would I be better off, considering I'm buying a parts boat, to go with the frame and mast of the "newer" boat and use my nice new sails on it to get that better rake (assuming it is new enough)? I'm assuming I can use the sails, made in around 2015 or so, with either mast? |

I wouldn't say that the mast rake changed, but rather changes (like sail cut) were made over the years regarding the ability to rake the mast further aft. Referring to the two boats mentioned in your other post, there won't be a lot of difference regarding mast raking ability if they are stock. You can use your newer sails on any H16. However, to rake the mast further aft (and get the full benefit of newer sails), you'll need a low-profile mainsheet system, longer forestay/shorter shrouds (most likely), etc. That said and all other things being equal, an '84 H16 is a much better boat than those of the 70s' and early '80s. |
