Post subject:  Mast Repair - Mask Cap Replacement/Repair

I just purchased a 2006 Hobie 16. It needs a repair to the mast cap which holds the main halyard assembly, and has the float sitting on it. The rivets hold the cap on appear to have come loose due to breakage at the top of the mast. Any advice on parts I need for the repair would be appreciated. And suggestions on how to make the repair without the use of rivets? I eager to get this boat in the water ASAP :)

The cap is part of the mast head assembly. Don't be afraid of rivets. Just buy a new mast head 20614001, four 8010131 rivets and a good rivet gun and get it over with. You'll probably want a 3/16" drill bit to clear the old holes.

It’s hard to see the condition of the fiberglass portion of the mast. Did the rivets tear out of the fiberglass? If the holes in the mast were damaged (torn out or over-sized), then you might need to relocate the holes in the replacement mast head. Not a huge issue, just move them about 1/2 away from the existing holes either forward or aft. The original comptip mast heads were screwed in using stainless steel sheet metal screws (not rivets). If you don’t want to used rivets, screws would be an option.
