Post subject:  Year of Sail by Number

I picked up a used set of H16 sails with a # of 52014.. This set is solid yellow and is a thicker dacron than my 81 Boomer main..

Does anyone know what year this sail was possibly produced?

Not sure if there is a sail number by year chart or something.

Thanks

If it's a Hobie sail, then it's about 1980.

Matt might have done this but if you are needing that research in the future you might take a look at old regatta results. The highest number in those results was probably built in the same year, maybe year before, as the regatta, if it is a 16.

Unfortunately, the Hotline stopped publishing sail numbers in regatta results sometime in the mid-70's.

There was also an explosion of numbers in the late 70's / early 80's.

My 1978 H-16 was 33556.
My '83 sail was 74722. That's over 8,000 sails a year.

I've found the sail-pattern chart in the Hotline (Mr. "Hotline Bounds", do you know the right issue?) helps identify years, as long as it wasn't a custom color.

I found the Hotline with the sail colors by year. See link below

Ive got the sail pattern hotline issue also.. From that, its possible that its a 77 or a 79 since it does show the solid yellow and some other solid colors listed as Nationals (not that this is a old Nationals sail I wouldnt think)

'79 is the best guess. Most '81 sails were upper 5XXXX & lower 6XXXX numbers

Another tip may be the font of the numbers.

Didn't all sails change to the current Souvenir Bold in 1980?
