Hi all, New guy here. I just purchased an 89 H16 that has a good bit of beach wear on the port hull. Just wondering how to gauge beach wear on the bottom. When do you know it is too much? Also, if the wear has reached the point of needing repair, what is the best method? Epoxy and glass or something else? Thanks |

The keel will wear through the gel coat early on, then will become flat. It actually may become a little concave when wearing badly. Depends on how much you drag the boat or on beach landings under power. Can take years to wear in most cases and never if carried on Cat Trax right from the water. There are many posts about "Bottom Jobs". Basic fix? Flip on its back. File keels flatter. Lay strips of glass cloth and resin (4-6 layers). Trim with a knife when "green" (still a little rubbery) and file / grind to shape when fully cured. You can sail as is or finish with a clear resin "hot coat". No need for gel coat. |
