Post subject:  Hobie 16 Main Halyard help

We just bought a 86 Hobie. It needs some fixing up. It has been at least 23 years since we last owned a Hobie.

We seem to remember the main halyard being part cable with rope on the bottom. This one appears to be all rope and no way to lock the sail at the top.

Are we correct? Should the main halyard be part cable? I think we need to order the correct halyard. BTW: it is a comp tip mast.

Just looking for confirmation that we don't have the right halyard setup. It works, but not what we think should be there.

Yes. The last 18" or so of the Comptip halyard is wire. It're pretty important to have it latched at the top as the cleats aren't really meant to carry the load of the sail.

Thanks. I suspected as much. Looks like I need to get a new one.

Not sure where you can get the comptip halyard, other than Hobie, but any good rigging shop should be able to make up a rope to cable halyard.

Though the jury is out on durability, I made my own with an old cable section. I cut the inner core back a little, slide the rope braid over the ball stop a couple inches from the end of the cable, then swaged a stop over the braid to hold to the cable ahead of the cable stop. So far it is working great. .
