Post subject:  Mast Base Repair
I decided that lashing down the mast when I step it isn't all that desirable. Here's the repair that I did. Tell me if it measures-up:

Used part of a a stainless steel rule (could have been any piece of thin gauge stainless steel), 10-24 x 3/4 stainless steel screws & Marine Tex epoxy. Drilled and tapped the casting for the screws. The bottom screw clears the mast step with plenty of room to spare.

This was cheaper than replacing the casting. I actually think it's stronger than original.

I think it will be fine. That part of the mast base is only used when raising/lowering the mast, and I doubt that there is an extreme amount of stress on it in the first place. You are removing the mast step pin after you've got it up correct?

The mast pin does get removed. You might expect me to forget, though, since it was probably 17 years ago since this boat could use a mast pin.

This is actually the third mast this boat has seen.

Mast #1 - crunched by accident, 1983

Mast # 2 - Bent from heavy air & counter rotated mast, 1989ish

Mast # 3 (current) from a second boat I purchased to part out 1990ish

I replaced the mast tang from old single hole style and substituted a mast base with better rotation stops (but with broken mast pin hole).

This is a true Frankin-boat. Many other broken & replaced parts as well as pieces cobbled together. Still works.
