Post subject:  Drills for Tacking

Can anyone suggest any drills for tacking. It seems that on the small lake I sail on I am always falling behind because I can't tack as fast as the other boats (the regattas are usually open class).

Any tips, tricks or drills would be great.

Thanks

I would say that the best way to get better at tacking is to do it....lots of it.

When I started sailing my 14 tacking was almost impossible. and I preferred to Jibe. Then I got a bigger boat that tacks easier and my friend started sailing the 14. He refused to give up as easily and now can tack the 14 flawlessly every time.

Basically just practice!

I sailed up a narrow channel on our lake(some places about 50 yds wide). The wind was comming up the channel. My son and I did about 30 tacks to get to the end.Great tacking practice. You do not need a narrow channel just sail up wind and tack every 30 secounds.

Search the net for College sailing drills. Some coaches suggest the first half hour of a "free" sailing session be practice drills, or, for instance...doing 50 figure eights BEFORE beginning "fun" sailing.
Kids get awfully good at completing those eights in the very least amount of time possible.
