Thanks... Ill be sailing offshore like always, here in PR there are no sailable lakes...so its the rough Atlantic out there all the time, or the milder Caribbean to the south...but I live in the north

Hi, I have new replacement lance cleats for my H16 and could install them tonight. But... I notice that lance cleats look kind of flimsy, square and tiny winny I just dont like how they sit on the frontbeam. Cam cleats would be sturdier, take more sailing abuse and perform better IMO. Any opinions on small cam cleats to control the jib traveler? Pros and cons of lance and cam cleats for traveler? thanks! |

Alex, I know most sailors that I talk to say cam cleats are over-kill. That might be true but with all my insecurities, I feel more secure with them. I sail solo most of the time and in rough conditions, I don't time to be concerned about anything but traveler out or travler in. I also like the up-unlocked and down-locked feature with the swivel pointing the cleat in whatever direction I (or my crew) are located. There's no side-angles required to lock and unlock the cleat. Of course, this is just me. I always say, use whatever works for you. I know guys that stand by the lance cleat. |

Ok guess Ill look further into the cams, I do like them better anyways for the same reasons. Should I use a flairhead on top of each to keep the line in the cam? or leave it "uncapped"?? |

Use lance cleats for the barber haul line. Cam cleats for the sheets. |

I've used both, and personally, I'd have to agree with David Bell on this one. The cams are overkill, but in rough conditions you will appreciate the fact that you dont have to pull the traveler sideways and the sheet upward....especially while solo-ing. In an emergency situation, such as that pre-pitchpole half second, I find it easier to just yank both lines upward to blow them both. It is personal preference though, and i know there are alot of people who prefer them, but im just a cam kind of guy. Oh yeah, and i'd say to definetly put the fairleads on top, just so your not hunting down your trav line. my $0.02 |
