Post subject:  Cat Righting - Righting System
I need to know the best "bag of water" righting system, as I plan to solo a lot since my H-16 sailing buddie is out of action. Please tell what works for you, and where I can get one. I don't know if the one in the H catalog is any good or not. Thanks.

There might be a type of righting system that might be more suitable for attempts to solo right the cat. I have read about a device called SoloRight distributed by some guy going by the name hobiegarry. He used to have a web site where he offered his stuff, but I can not find it any longer. IIRC the Soloright was a reinforced oar that was tied to the pylons on one end and attached to the lip formed by the deck (hobie 16). The sailor was expected to step outwards on the pole while holding on to some modified rope style rightning system. I liked this sytem and the "videos" on the web site looked convincing. And the system could be used on much bigger cats (solo).
The other system is refered to as the rightning pole (IIRC) it is mounted to the area around the dolphin striker. Here the user hangs from the pole in order to lift the mast. I am not sure if a bolt on kit is available for a 16, also not sure if it is suitable for solo attempts.

I'm a novice. I've only been sailling the Hobie 16 10 times.

I'm sailling it solo at most. Never captured !

What is so hard about rightning it solo ?

Is it not possible to rigntning it solo ?

I'm sailling in 8-12 m/s vind in an inlet in Denmark. The water debt is from ½m to 3m. Is that a problem in case capturing ?

The only problems in righting your boat are:

1.) Having enough weight to lift the mast back out of the water
2.) Having the wind help you
3.) Ensuring that the boat comes up, doesn't keep going and then doesn't flip right back over the other way..... :wink:

Hobiegary isn't selling ot talking about the soloright anymore. But, it is a really simple to make system you can do yourself. Or, you can get the power righiting system fro Rick White.

All these "systems" do is give better leverage. They are a pole that attaches to the dolphin striker and store under the tramp. When you need to use it, you swing it out, attach to the upper corner casting, and hang on it. When the boat rights, you stow it back under the tramp.

I know it's not the best description, but look at the pictures and you will figure it out. Old windsurfer masts work well for the pole.
