Post subject: | NC hobie 16 registration |
I just got my hobie 16 from a guy but it has never been registered in my state of North Carolina, or any other state. I was wondering if anyone else has there hobie registered in NC or don't have it registered? The state regulations say "All sailboats used on public waters must be registered if longer than 14 feet at the load waterline." Does anyone know the length of a hobie 16 at the load waterline? Thanks. |

I have mine registered, mainly because I sail on some inland lakes that are occasionally monitored by wildlife officers and they will ticket. I could be wrong about this but I think that if you sail your boat in the ocean only you don't have to have it registered. But you will definately need it on any regulated inland lakes. By the way, I ran into a real hassle when I tried to get my boat. I think mainly because it had been registered before so you might not have this problem. But, because the previous owner hadn't registered the boat, the previous owner had, and the registration had expired I had to have them track down info from the third party so it could be registered in my name. I mean it literally took me weeks to get in put in my name, crazy. |

Yes a Hobie 16 is over 14 feet LWL. Here in TX it is impossible to register an undocumented boat. Search for old messages ... there was someone out of San Antonio who decided to disamble an healthy Hobie 16 to sell the thing in parts because the Parks and Wildlife dept. gave him so much trouble with the registration. Good luck in your state. Patrick |

My local NC WRC office said unless it has a motor, no registration required. I just went to the NC WRC website where it says: "Anyone who purchases or transfers a motorized vessel or sailboat 14 feet or longer or who owns a personal watercraft (jet ski), will be required to title the vessel effective Jan.1, 2007." Since it is a new regulation, I think the interpretation (right or wrong) of the person (and office) I talked to was that the "vessel" or "sailboat" had to be motorized for registration to be required. They specifically asked me if it had a motor or if I was ever going to mount a motor on it. When I said no, they said no registration was required. I dug a little deeper into the NC WRC website and it says: * All motorized vessels used on public waters must be registered, including jet skis. * All sailboats used on public waters must be registered if longer than 14 feet at the load waterline. * If a vessel registered in another state is brought into North Carolina for over 90 consecutive days, the registration must be transferred to North Carolina. * If you choose to title your vessel, it must be registered as well. This is contrary to what my local office told me. |

I don't currently have my 16 registered. I will get around to it eventually, but it'll be a pain, I'm sure. |

I guess there will be two of us hauled away in leg irons! ![]() ![]() I'm in the process of contacting my seller (in Cape Cod) about sending back the bill of sale to have it notarized. I guess having it titled will make it easier to sell in the future. Of course, once titled, then it must be registered- and annual registration fees paid. They claim all this is to "protect" buyers and owners, but frankly sounds mainly like a revenue generator to me. |
