Post subject:  Mast Step Link setup
Hi all,
I have just received a mast step link from the Hobie and tried to figure out how to install it using the manual that came with it.
The material list includes:
1 Step link body
1 Bushing
1 Clevis pin and a ring
1 Length of 1/16" line
1 Bolt with lock nut

Well, my problem is not how to attach the mast step link - this is pretty straight forward, but what to do with the bolt and the lock nut. It is too thin to fit nicely in the holes of the mast base (and the bushing) so that I can wiggle the link body in any direction. Plus being so thin it does not look like it is strong enough to hold the mast.
Why bolt and not a pin with two rings for example?

I know some use screw drivers for that, I used a shackle and a bungee last weekend to step the mast up. I'm just curious because this link is a new part that came from Hobie. Maybe this thin bolt is all you need?

In the "stock" installation of the mast step link, it's semi-permanently attached to the mast step with the bolt and nut.

Most everybody dispenses with the bolt and nut and uses another pin there so they can remove the link when sailing. Keeps the link from getting mangled when you have a lot of mast rake.

I keep forgetting to mail that and the Telo-Cat to you. I'll get that done this week. I used two pins, both of which were ground down a bit to make them go in and out easier. I tied the piece of line included to both of the rings on the pins and the middle of the line went through somewhere on link so it was all one unit.
