Hi guys! I have bought a snap shackle (part 20803) to attach upper main sheet block to the boom. The problem is that the opening between the boom and the block hanger (part 10760000) is too small - I cannot fit the snap shackle in. I'm puzzled why is that? I have called a dealer and they have never seen this. Is there a different block hanger which is longer? I don't see it in the catalog. I have tried to find a smaller snap shackle but no luck. Now I sail with a snap shackle attached to the block and with a D shackle attached to the block hanger. But this is too long and ugly. Thanks for your opinions! |

The block hangers (the technical term is a "bail") are standard, but the way they are mounted is not. A trick to cut another 1/2" out of the mainsheet stack-up is to mount the bail closer to the boom, so that the opening will barely allow a shackle to pass through. Newer boats come that way from the factory. Having a snap shackle on the top end kind of defeats the purpose of having a low-profile mainsheet system. |

That's my vote. ![]() I think just the shackle was tight to get through the bail on that boat. |

OK, that all makes sense. I have read about minimizing stack-up so this is what I was trying to do, but with a snap shackle in place. ![]() See, the way I'm forced to launch my boat most of the time is that if the wind blows at all, then I have to hoist main sail and attach main sheet on the water. So I'm trying to use some help in the form of snap shackle, because putting the D shackle to the bouncing boom over the water is a real trick! Well, I will see if I can find a different shackle or file off some of the existing one. If none of this works, I always have the original D shackle. ![]() |

Instead of using a snap shackle, use a quick-pin on the traveller car. ![]() |

![]() I use both. For some reason, Probably my sail has been recut, but, If I were to take my main Block to block, I would have a 90 degree bend in my mast. Snap shackles rock!!!! |

Snap shackles rock!!!! You've probably got the old length forestay and shrouds. I know I do, and I can barely get my stacked up 5:1 system block to block with some serious pulling. |

Ok, my question is, as a a 1972-1986 racer, how is this"new" insane amount of mast rake achived? While I am not racing anymore, I am very interested in the idea of increased mast rake allowing me to drive the boat harder in 20-30 knot winds on a reach to keep the bows up. I am block to block on my 81 hobie, and am no where near the mast rake I am seeing in photos. I am using Harken low profile 6:1. I am wondering if the boom bale has been moved further back on the bom to allow a little more room? My 81 hobie has 2 bales, I notice the new boats have only one. The rear factory bale on my '81 boat is 24 1/2" from the rear end of the boom. Where are they currently being placed? So, other than using tiny shackles, re- riviting my boom bale so the shackle will barely fit thru it, what is left other than to move the boom bale further back on the boom? Or am I compleletely off track here? Also , have the jobs been recut (since 81) to accomodate the increased mast rake? I am running my jib near the top of the chainplate, and am block to block on the jib when I am block to blcok on the main, but still am not achieving the rake I am seeing in others. My jib system, by the way , is the trentech sliders, with a bullet block attached to them. |

Yes - new jibs cuts were introduced in 2000. |

The upper triple block is a 40mm compared to the older 57mm. It looks tiny but works really well. |

I think the main is the same. Just the jib has changed in size. Mbounds would know for sure though. |
