| Post subject: | Cam locks on rudders |
Pretty new to Hobie Cats. Is there an easy way to move the cam locks on the rudders? It seems awfully difficult to move them to lock the rudders in the up and down positions. Also, my starboard rudder doesn't want to lock up. It seems the cam piece is a little too big and the rudder bumps it, and the cam won't allow the rudder to travel far enough. If you take the rudders off and turn them upside-down, you'll see that there is a really big plastic screw up in there. I guess many peoples' don't turn easily but I had no trouble adjusting mine. It sounds (without seeing a photo), that the holes in your rudders might be drilled in the wrong place. Try using the Hobie template (located here) to check the placement of the holes. The cam and plunger system should be taken apart periodically, inspected, lubed and reassembled. Use sister screws to replace the rivet that the cam pivots on. That way, you can replace the cam easily if it breaks. Smooth off any rough edges where the plunger and cam go together. When everything is working right, the rudder will lock down with a distinct "snap." |
