Post subject:  Chicago Hobies :: where to keep 'em?

I moved to Chicago and have my Hobie in our new garage - problem is that it takes up the majority of the garage - the trailer tongue has to be removed and still the hulls just barely fit. The mast is awkwardly suspended overhead diagnolly. The whole setup makes a trip to the lake the world's largest pain.

Ideally I'd like to find a marina where I can keep my '16 on a trailer or dolly near the water.

Anyone found a good solution for Lake Michigan Hobie storage?

I'd really prefer to keep her inside out of the elements, especially in the winter, but our garage is really dominated by the boat right now.

Thanks,

G

If you're on Chicago's south side, come on over to Ogden Dunes. We keep our H-16 and H-14 there on the beach. It works.

I heard once that the south side of Chicago is the baddest part of town. And if you go down there you'd better just beware of a man named Leroy Brown.

Actually I need to find a place to keep her out of the elements - preferably a garage or something that is covered - closer to the water the better. I know the winters in Chicago can be pretty brutal and I just refinished my boat and don't want it to degrade....

So still 2 questions....
Where to keep it? Where to sail it?

Thanks!

We used go to Wilmette on the north shore. They had mast up storage on the beach.

I lived in Indiana and mostly sailed from Lake Street Beach in Gary. No storage but great acess to the lake. I may have been taken over by jetskis..

You used to have to travel well offshore on the south side of Chicage. There were few places to land and some in the projects used sailboats on the lake as targets.

Did you ask the local dealer for suggestions?

Actually I just spoke with that dealer today and he told me about some marinas that offer indoor yacht storage. I called them and they told me that the Hobie would be the smallest boat by far that they'd store and that it would be expensive. Oh well - you gotta take care of your toys!
