My 1984 standard white hiking stick gives me fiberglass burrs everytime I use it. I was thinking of putting polyurathane on it after a good sand. Any other ideas?

That sounds about right. It probably sat out in the sun too long. I would give it a light sand (wearing gloves & long sleeves) and then coat it with something to seal the exposed fibers- polyurethane, paint, resin.

Hmmmmmmm. I wish I'd thought of that when I first started sailing (before I went to the Arriba stick). I used friction tape. Well, it did give the stick an excellent grip. Oh well . . . you sail and learn.

Have you considered using heat shrink tubing? If you don't leave the stick out in the hot sun all the time it might be an alternative to doing a lot of sanding and painting or glassing. A good electronics store (Frys on the west coast) should have long sections in stock. It's just an idea...

I sanded it with 320 and then put two coats of polyurathane on it. Took 10 min. and looks and feels new. Thanks, Nate
