Post subject:  Jib downhaul block/halyard question(s)

This past weekend, the little sheave in my jib downhaul block (11070000) crumbled. I’m looking at what needs to be done in order to fix/replace this.

Since the jib downhaul block is permanently attached to the jib halyard, do both have to be replaced at the same time? I’m assuming the answer is yes. Any implications with just not fixing it and running the jib halyard line over the bare post in the downhaul block?

I’m being cheap here. It pains me to buy stuff that I don’t need in order to replace something that may work fine as is. I’m also trying to limit the money I spend on upgrades (reason for not just going to the Aussie jib halyard system) since this is a 26 year old boat.

Thanks,
Jeff

You could just cut the old block off and re-swage the wire around a new one.

Or, you could drill the rivet out of the old block and replace the rivet in the new block with a small bolt.

Or, you could just use it as is. After all, it's a 26 year old boat.

Thanks for the response. I got another offline response that I may take up.

I don't have the tools for swaging, and it's probably something I'd manage to screw up. The offline response got me thinking, I'll probably just cut the old block off and replace it with something that I can shackle on (bullet block with a becket) and be done with it.

I'm the king of overthinking things.
