Post subject:  SECRET OF WAVE SAILING

Went out this Saturday and the wind had been blowing pretty good all day. About 3 foot waves with an occasional larger one. Kept getting tea bagged in 50 degree water. Had on my wetsuit, but still pretty cold as I would get dunked and then back up into the breeze (air temp 55 degrees). When I would get going it was better, but still exhausting. My water is pretty shallow (6-8 feet) so the waves are pretty choppy and short frequency. Also 8 times saltier than the ocean, so very dense. What are some tips for sailing in waves like this? I know about keeping the sails full to add power, but anything else would help. Thanks.

Wave sailing is awesome. The trick is keep a hull in the air. :D Well ok maybe keep it as high as possible. Just kissing the tops of those choppy waves is where you want to be. When a wave slows you down you have to bear off to get the hull back up before the next one hits you. You didn't mention a crew. I think it is a little easier when you are double trapped. The boat is more stable.

It takes practice.

You should be constantly scanning ahead, looking at the water so you can prepare for changes in the wind or waves in advance. Only occasionally glance to see what is going on inside the boat.

Also, you may find it beneficial to raise the height of your trapeze if your rear-end is constantly being hit by waves. And, some people install foot straps to give a solid connection to the boat.
