Post subject: | Buying New Sails |
Uggg. I know I'm a fool for ordering brand new sails for a '79, but it needs sails and I'm not coming up with anything decent used. Can't sail it at all right now since I managed to run a batten through the luff and destroy the bottom 8" of the luff. All the used sails that I'm finding are worthless, so I might as well just order new. My '88 hull should be showing up this week and I have a possible lead on a '90 for the other side. I don't expect to to make it to nationals or anything, but it should be a good boat for recreational sailing and small races. Besides, if I order brand new sails, I can just transfer them to a new boat when a 96+ appears in Ohio and I buy it. If I order OEM white sails from my dealer, for a Hobie 16, are they going to have the following, or is it going to cost me extra. * Windows * Tell tale windows *Tell tails * Sail numbers *Batten pocket protectors? Secondly, Are my old battens going to fit the new sails? I spent a good bit of time sanding and putting new caps on them. Third, It looks like 1200 + tax is about par? I tried to contact the nearest dealer, but he hasn't returned my email or phone call. I'll probably end up ordering from the next closest dealer sometime next week, unless a decent used set comes along. |

www.sunjammers.com has always treated me well, and Brad's always good for a conversation to boot. |

A new sail should come with a few telltails and batten protectors on the luff. If your old battens are from 1979, they may fit, but I wouldn't be surprised if some don't. When I got a new main for my 18 this year, some of the battens that I had been using on my mid 90's sails were too short. Worst case would be that you have to bump them all up one pocket and trim and then get one new long batten for the bottom. sm |

The new sail will have a teflon stitched bolt rope so they go up the mast easier. Yes to all those other things, window, numbers, tell-tales with windows. I have never seen anyone have trouble with using old battens on a 16 so don't worry. There fair number of used sails around here (upstate NY). If you are still interested in going that route it may be worthwhile to post a sails wanted msg on the forum at fleet204.com. We have a lot of racers who get new sails. cheers Bill |

I just bought new sails for my '84 a few weeks ago and they came with: windows in main and jib, tell tails, tell tail windows, batten ties, batten pocket protectors, numbers etc... In other words - ready to go. Also, my battens fit perfectly in the new main sail (I used different battens for the jib but I think your old ones will fit fine). New jibs are slightly longer then old jibs but the clew is cut shorter and higher (about 2 1/2"). This will allow for more rake and better pointing. Price seems right. NCSTrey sent you to the right place for what you need. Good luck (we're going to try them this weekend for the first time). |

Ordered 'em today. Looks like I've got a decent chance of thunderstorms this weekend, so the boat just won't go out. Should have them for next week.....crosses fingers. Probably should have ordered a nice sail bag to protect my investment.....oh well hopefully the girlfriend will get the hint when I complain incessantly about the old bag. |
