Post subject: | Manuevering with the jib only |
Hello All, I might have to launch from a city dock that has the ramp buried behind other docks, etc. I might have to paddle my way past the breakwater. Since I will not have my main bent on, will I have enough thrust from the jib for the short distance to the beach? (I'd rather not paddle all that way). Anyone ever do this or have an opinion? Thanks. |

It really depends on which way the wind is coming from. You can reach and point upwind a small amount under jib alone, but not too far. Downwind is easy. Tacking is impossible (in my limited experience) and you'll probably have to gybe if you need to turn through the wind. If you have to go upwind, you're going to be paddling a lot. Of course I was doing this in a protected area of an inland lake (no current). Others may have more/better advice. |

On the small inland lake that I sail from, we usually do the following. Back the boat into the water. Float the boat off and tie to the dock. Park the car. Point the boat into the wind while still tied off. Get the main up. Push off and head upwind/downwind. Works pretty well. Gets banged on the dock a bit. |
