Post subject:  Rudder questions

I bought a used H16 set of rudders/castings/crosbar/tiller to have as a spare. They have new cams installed and also shims.

The rudders hava a yellowish color and have either "CATCO" or "CALFCO" engraved in them. It is hard to make it out.

Are these stock or aftermarket?

What material are they made from?

What is a good way to clean them up?

As far as I know Hobie Cat never molded any such letters/name in their rudders. If you cannot see any fiberglass material on the blades it's a good chance they're made of lexan which would explain the yellowing color. Is there any chance you can shoot some photos of them (full view & some macros) & post them here??

I tried Ajax, Comet and Softscrub with bleach but there is really no way to get the yellow out. I lightly sanded mine (150 grit) and sprayed with Krylon Fusion. Its made for plastic and seems to be holding up.

Acetone works really well for taking the yellow and other types of stains off of rudders.

If they are made of lexan don't put acetone on them! Be sure you know what you're dealing with before using such harsh chemicals
