Post subject: | Mast rake + new shrouds |
With my old shrouds, of unknown age, I was able to have them in the second hole from the bottom on the chainplate. Upon ordering new Hobie shrouds, I am now on the second hole from the top. Any further down and I can't get my old style forestay connected to the bridle. Upon comparing them, the new shrouds are about 1.5 inches shorter than the original shrouds. Theroretically, I should be able to just move them up 1.5" and have the same mast rake???? I know that way I had the old shrouds set in the chain plates had some significant weather helm. I'm worried that if I can't get the old school forestay connected that I might be screwed when it comes to mast rake. Haven't had enough wind to sail it since putting the new standing rigging on. |

how many holes are in your chainplates? shrouds and forestay? Did you get a new forestay also? |

new shrouds are shorter than the old ones. You need to replace all the rigging at once to insure proper fit across the board. |

The forestay was kinked back in the fall and I replaced it with another non-aussie one from murrays... Didn't really want to spring the money for the aussie setup until I knew if I like the boat. I guess it sounds like I need to drop the dinero and buy the aussie setup and have it overnighted before I leave for vacation????? I've got the 7 hole adjusters on the shrouds and a ten hole up front....... |

You might be able to get a 2nd 10 hole adjuster up front to make it all link up. |

That's what I was thinking..... So it's ok that the shrouds are the the second hole from the top on the chainplates? Is as the shrouds are shorter and in the top holes, does that mean I am running more rake than before? |

how old are your sails? when hobie changed the mast rake (new shrouds are shorter, forstay is longer) they also tweaked the sail, i think. I have a 1980 h16 with new shrouds and the boat runs fine, except that the sail can't sheet in as tight as it should be able to with less mast rake. While this could simply be a result of sail stretch or an aging mast flexing, it could also be that hobie uses slightly differently shaped sails. if anyone could confirm this that would be nice. At any rate the glitch only really effects performance when there is enough wind to fill the sails and apply good pressure, but not enough to consitantly fly a hull. as far as your mast rake angle, moving the mount's up 1.5" will give you the same rake as before, so unless you have good reason to switch to the new setup (fraying cables, too much leehelm, or pitchpoling) i'd recommend just mounting the shrouds 1.5" higher. |

I've got brand new sails that I bought a few weeks ago, and yes they are cut differently. The problem that I am worried about, was too much weather helm. With the new sails and old rigging, the weather helm was getting pretty bad. I've found that this boat starts to point poorly when I am raked. I'm not near as far as the new boats and it seems like it might be bad. Most of the franken cat is a 79.........a lot of it is off newer boats and all of the standing rigging is brand new from Hobie and/or Murrays |

Hey Tri X, Have you tried to adjust the rudder rake yet? |

Not yet. I am in the process of getting my hands on some adjustable upper castings......... Will rudder adjustment help with the poor pointing upwind? I was always under the impression that more mast rake would allow for better pointing. I found that when I set the rake similar to that of the new boats that mine actually points worse and gives me a sore arm. |

You using a 5:1 mainsheet or the low profile 6:1? If you're raking more you may need low profile blocks, otherwise you can't get the leech tight enough to point well. I've avoided going with a more raked setup for that reason. You need adjustable castings to cope with the weather helm, new rigging to allow you to rake more, and low profile blocks for the reason stated above. That being said, buying the new length shrouds ends up being an expensive proposition. Custom length shrouds start to become an awful tempting alternative. |

You just have to set up the boat and adjust the shrouds to a position you are comfortable with. Rig... sheet in and look. Adjust the shrouds again, tension the jib haylard and try sheeting again. Adjust to approx where you had it before, then take it sailing. Make further adjustments if needed. |

Gotcha. I guess I need to put the old shrouds on and step the mast, so I can measure the rake. Then try it with the new ones. What I am wondering, is that if the forestay isn't reaching without a second chainplate, is there more rake? |

Little late for the post, but article offers a few insights. http://home1.gte.net/res07lm8/hobie/arc ... ature2.htm |

If the forestay does not reach... and it use to... you have more rake now. You can pull the old and new shrouds tight and compare the lengths. Measure the difference in length and make up for that in adjustment in the chain plates. If not enough plate... you could add 10 hole adjueters, but the boat sails better with proper (current) rake. I would try and make it work with more rake. |
