Post subject:  Hobie Outback 2020 position on the car rack / Hobie stand
Dear Hobie forum,

I just purchased my first Hobie Outback 2020.

I would like to ask two questions ;

1. I am transporting the Outback upright on my car roof rack. The rack crossbars are 900 mm apart.
What is the correct / recommend position of kayak in relation to the two crossbars? Is the “Hobie” word need to be in the centre of the crossbars?

2. I also purchased the Hobie kayak stand SKU: 87363222. I understand that it is not commended as a long term storage for the kayak But let say I want to put the kayak upright for 3-4 weeks for rigging or temporary storage what would be the recommend position of outback in relation to bars on the stand? Again am I correct if I position the outback so that ‘Hobie’ word in the centre of the bars? And for long term storage if I store the outback upside down does it matter when the two supporting points are?

More than a day is long term storage as far as potential damage.

Equal load as best you can get is key.

I will store my outback upside down if not used for more than a day.

I gone the general drift about positioning the outback on the stand and car rake and will play with it.

I was hoping for more specific info for outback 2020 , like where is the centre of gravity for outback 2020 unrigged ?

What I do with any yak going onto the roof is just slide it back and forth until it takes the same amount of effort to pull the stern down to raise the bow off the front rack as it takes to push the stern up off the rear rack. When they're about the same; it's centered.

Thanks Dan,

That's what i am doing and also ask my daughter to double check.

With the outback 2020 , we feels when doing that the word "Hobie" on the yak is very close to middle of the two crossbars.

I guess i mainly looking for confirmation as it is not a precise or scientific way.

Here's what I would do.

Place the kayak on a piece of wood on the ground. Move the Kayak back/forwards to find the balance point. Place the Kayak on the racks with that point placed an equal distance from each rack.

My garage floor is very level, so I will give it a go with your suggestion and see when the balance point is and report it back here.

I’m sure you have thought of this but, put the outback on a flat hard surface, put a rod like perhaps a 2 inch PVC pipe under it and roll the kayak till it balances or “teeter totters”.
That should be your CG.
(You could also put weights in simulating various loads in places to see how the CG varies)
