Post subject:  Early production rudder upgrade

Having a first generation outback (not sure of the year could be a 03) with an original style rudder
I wanted to upgrade the rudder but there was nothing on the market for my year
I ended up fabricating my own
I used a marine grade poly board called; Starboard from Tapp plastics( no advertisement it’s just where I found it)
and is workable with wood tools
I started with a 3/8” thick 10”x16” piece which cost around $15
Cut it with jig saw the shape I wanted about 3 times as large as the original
Make sure when fabricating that you leave 20% of the total surface area of the rudder in front
Of the turning axis ( rudder pin) for ease of turning and control
Next I took a belt sander and shaped the “starboard” like a airplane wing for better performance in the water
For the tee section on top of the rudder for pin mounting and steering lines
I used more “starboard” stainless steel angle and stainless steel fasteners
Now it’s like having upgraded to the sailing rudder on newer than mine outbacks
Tracking and steering have improved 100% from stock
