Post subject:  Rudder pull line question

A few months ago I bought a 2nd hand 2014 Outback, it's the model with the rudder that folds right up out of the water and onto the top of the kayak.

There is a rudder up pull line on one side of the kayak and a rudder down pull line on the other side. However the rudder down line has gradually got longer and longer, or should I say hanging out longer, by about a foot. But the rudder up line on the other side of the kayak has no spare play and the pull handle is hard against the body of the kayak.

Can anyone explain how to get these back into balance?

If the handle doesn't retract after you put the rudder up or down, this usually indicates a detached or worn out bungee. The bungee takes up the slack. This document might help understand/explain.

Hey thanks for that Plfinch, explains the whole thing perfectly.

Yes it would seem you are correct, the shock cord has failed. I'll see if I can fix it myself, if it is beyond me I can probably live with it, doesn't look like any harm is being done, just tidiness.
