Wanted to get a better skid plates for my Lynx from Navarre Kayak Fishing, but they are not delivering to Australia at the moment. I made 2 versions until I can get them.
1. 6mm aluminium plate wrapped in rubber.
2. Rubber from an old roof rack rod holder with small aluminium plate for strength. Which version do you think is better?

If I were to pick I would choose the second. Especially if you have used a screw a bit longer to compensate for the difference in thickness.

I would be worried that the aluminum version may have too much leverage because of the lack of give and eventually may pry the screw out.

In general, the more contact with the kayak and less force on the fastener the better. I get the impression that the fastener wells are not really very strong.

I too have been thinking about making my own skid plates, The Navarre ones are cool but I would like something that wraps around and stands out the back a bit more similar to your second option.
