Hi, I'm brand new to sailing, and I'm looking to buy my first boat. I wanted to run this by you experts to see what you thought this boat could be really worth. Here's the ad-- 1983 HOBIE 17' catamaran, 17' 0'' Rare find Hobie 17. Boat comes complete with trailer, sail box, homemade cat trax, two sails (an 18s sail that was cut down (pink and purple) the original sail (white with blue), trailer, wings, extra line, extra steel trapeze wires, and a tackle box with many extra parts ($$$). Personal equipment included (gloves, trapeze harness, and 2 life vests. Everything you need to get sailing right away.$1500 o.b.o. The price seems high, but I'm not sure. The owner said that one of the hulls is perfectly watertight and the other has just a little water in it after sailing. What should I pay for this? Also, I'm going to look at it tomorrow, what do I need to inspect closely to make sure I don't get stuck with a bad boat? Thanks guys!!! (and girls) Martin |

The 17 came out in 1985, so this is likely a Hobie 16. The 16 is actually 16' 7" (almost 17 feet). Better be sure that it is actually a Hobie as well. Some sellers think that any two hulled sail boat is a Hobie. |

Yep... it is a 17. Price will vary on region. Hobie Cat does not track used values, but a new one is $9,995. |

right, i realize that they don't track the used values, but in your opinion does the asking price sound too high? if so, what would you expect to pay if it were you buying it? thanks for your help! |

Definitely a 17 - and probably newer than an '85 (but not much), since I don't think they started using those hull stripes until '87. The hull stripes are in decent shape which is a good indication it hasn't been left in the sun too much, although the crossbars are bleached out. Looks to be in decent shape, other than a little "roller rash" on the hulls - that's easy to fix. Offer $1,200 and see if they'll bite. I'd pay $1,500 for it (as long as it didn't weigh too much). |

Those stripes came out on 16's in 86. It was called Molokai. |
