Post subject:  Minimizing rudder hum

I would like to ask the forum about rudder hum. I know that I need to redrill the rudder pivot hole since there is a definate play in my rudders. My concern is with the rudder casting itself. Should the rudder blade fit snugly into bottom portion of the lower rudder casting? On my H-17 here is at least a 1/4" gap between the bottom portion of the lower casting and the rudder blade. Is this normal? On my old H-16 the rudder blade would fit snugly into the lower rudder casting.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

I don't think the gap will have anything to do with Humm. It might cause slop. Tightening the bolt or adding shim disks should tighten up the slop from side to side. If the gap is forward and the rudder can move fore and aft then adjustments can be made in the rake screw in the lower casting and the cam lock plate on the top casting to tighten it up.

If the problem is still hummmmmming rudders try our support link above or the direct link to a correction technique:
