Has anyone ever done this? Will it work? I have a Hobie 18 that is like a piece of swiss cheese, but my mast and rigging are great. I found a H17 without a mast or sails and was thing of combining the 2. Will it work without having to cut the mast?

well I have both alongside each other and my amateur opinon is that the 17 cross beam does look beefy enough for the 18 mast and rig

Go to this link:
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=13859&start=0&hilit=hans

If it does not work, go to Search and type in Hans and work it from there.
If you find the link you will see that Hans fitted a Tiger mast to his 17. There are some good remarks by some very experienced H17 sailors, worth reading.

It also crossed my mind that you have said nothing about the condition of the 17 you are looking at. There is a comment on the thread that early 17's had a weak spot in the beam design (later corrected). Loading up an oversize rig on an original 17 beam might not be a great move.
Read the thread, there are some very informed guys making comments.
