I bought a 1989 17' in pretty good shape for very little $$. I am currently going to purchase for next season: New tramp and wing tramps & new lines all around. Next season is pentax sqaure head sail - current sail is trashed but I dont have $1000 to blow - I'll sail it unitl its shreded. Just wonder what else needs to be "gone through" before I put it all back together next summer. Currently the hulls are off of the main "beams" and I plan on waxing them up. I appears this boat was stored outside for a few years - but is otherwise in good shape. I sailed it 4 times before winter set in in NE Indiana. The goose neck is broken - but I think I have a spare in all the parts that came with it. I also need to rivet a new "hook" at the top of the mast that catches the hallyard ring. Just looking for easy and cheap "fixes" as I bring her back to ship shape. -Thanks in advance -Mike |

be sure to look at the shrouds, we tend to replace them about every 2-3 years depending on use. the 1st time you lose a mast and have to wait for help you will appreciate a new set of standing rigging. |

Here are some low cost ideas. Standing rigging was going to be my first suggestion. Replace any stuck delrin rudder screws (positional and kickup adjusting) Tune and fair your rudders. Shim rudders and rudder pins to reduce slop - no performance increase that I can tell, but greatly improves feel. Check for slop between the crossbar castings and the tapered reciever holes in the hulls. Mine had slop, so I had a guy put in a block of hard material called G10. Replace the line between the trap wire and the dogbone. Leak test the mast. clean and Mclube the luff track. If you've got a bad back, build a single hand mast stepping system. If you want a bad back, don't build one. Building one is like skinning a cat, so check this forum, many of us have posted methods. Jack up the trailer and feel the ease and smoothness of wheel rotation, any grinding noise or periodic resistance, re-pack or replace bearings. Install a righting system. I've got a Murrays righting pole $200, but if you're heavy, just get a big rope. Set the boat on its side on the beach and try it in order to set your preferred grip-knot positions. Check trailer lighting. Clean and lube the blocks. Best, Dan P. 2003 H17 SE / Sport |

Stuff to do with the boat apart: - Tighten up the outboard crossbar reciever castings. - Inspect cross bars for cracks. - Adjust dolphin striker if necessary. - Repair hull bottoms. - Inspect and replace centerboard lines if necessary. sm |

I now have a "like new" square top sail & tramp and plan to implement all of the great suggestions in this post Any sources for a wing tramps and a boom are appreciated |

Mike: Where did you get the Square top and tramp from? You can get wing covers from Hobie dealer.
