Either I should have been born a blonde..... OR I genuinely can't seem to find any information about this. Both my lower rudder castings have a quick release for the cam. There is no mention of this on the parts guide and my google search's have come up empty. Judging from the looks it's simply a small bolt which runs directly through the plunger and extrudes through both sides of the casting. IF parts are nolonger made for these has anybody constructed a DIY? Cheers in advance, Matt |

Photo? That sounds odd. I could imagine a bolt up thru the adjuster screw... spring and threaded to the plunger to pull down the plunger? |

Photos attached Matt. I'm starting to wonder if these are from another brand perhaps? Looks Hobie to me but I'm no expert. The H17 I bought is from the 1999 Worlds held in Melbourne Australia (Hull#2261 Sail#5338) It's a genius solution when your cam locks without the upper casting in place.

I've been told by a reliable Hobie source here down under that this must have been machine engineered by a previous owner. Looking over the setup I'm sure I can replicate this to the other casting. |

That's pretty slick! I actually came up with a similar mod that I did to my castings. It is much simpler, but works well. If you remove the plastic plunger, you will see that it's hollow inside. I took a small piece of line about 6" long (batten tie line) and epoxied it into the plunger so it sticks out like a tail. Then I re-assembled the cam components and passed the end of the line through the spring and through the plastic cam adjusting screw (this screw also comes with a hole through it). Then I took a small ball stop and tied it to the line. If the cam gets stuck in the down position, I can reach back with one hand and pull down on the line and flip the cam back up with the other hand. sm |

Yeah no racing to be done on this old girl, just social Hobie sailing at its best with a mixed fleet of H14's, H16's and H18's finally adding the first H17. srm that's not a bad idea either. Simple, easy to setup and functions for it's intended purpose. When I figure out a replacement screw setup simular to the one I've posted i'll add some photos here. |
