I'm planning to get a new set of sails for my H17Sport and have been looking at a Whirlwind Super R Square top. Does anyone have experence with this sail? If yes, please elaborate and point me to what type of battens were used. Conversly, what other main sails are out there for the H17Sport. Thanks |

Fastcat: I have a main kind of like that, that was cut by Sabre. http://www.thebeachcats.com/modules.php ... _album.php Bob Curry suggested the battens on the top of the first page. Just take to top one out and put in second pocket when not in use, so you won't break or loose it. http://www.murrays.com/archive/38-39.pdf Doug |

The smoke main from Hobie looks pretty cool. Your local dealer will have the battens you need. HOBIE CATS NORTHWEST 103 LAKE STREET SOUTH KIRKLAND, WA 98033 Phone: 1-425-827-8080 E-mail: [email protected] |

There is a guy (Tom) currently advertising several H17 sails For Sale on the beachcats.com. He was an avid Hobie 17 sailor, before he went to the 'dark side'. Maybe check there! |

The guy named Tom will not answer my e-mails. I have e-mailed him in response to the tramp. I put my foot through mine last month. ![]() |

Haven't got them yet, but I've been talking to Chip at Whirlwind and likely will go with their Super R Square top. ![]() |

Well I did it. I placed an order for a silver/grey (w/red trim) Pentex square top main and a red standard jib. (Sorry Doug, but in the conditions I sail, the extra size afforded by one like you use would require me to keep it roled up most of the time. Plus, I like the lack of clutter sheeting from the front crossbeam provides). My factory main is starting to delaminate and since Hobie won't update to new materials and sail shapes, I had to go to aftermarket, sorry Hobie. I did the same for my wing seats (with reinforcement around the tubing, no more wear throughs), sorry Hobie. And my new 8:1 down haul, sorry Hobie. But if Hobie is not willing to up-date the 'Sport' others are more than happy to, sorry Hobie. ![]() |

Post subject: | question for fastcat |
Good morning- I also need to replace wing-seats. where did you you get yours please? I think I am going to follow your lead on getting a new main also. Any advice or suggestions? Thanx! ![]() - Stephen PS I feel your frustration with Hobie. I love the company and the history, but at some point, perhaps in the past, they need to move to the future. A lot of upgrades that we buy aftermarket should be standard at no extra cost. READER CAUTION: Rant to follow - please ignore -more or less off subject ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh yeah, Happy New Year! |

Doug - I'll take pictures when I get them and am back out on the water, late March/early April. ![]() Widerisbetter - I got the wing seat mesh through Murrays. They are similar to the stock seats except the areas around the top of the inboard tubing has an added layer of solid vinyl and should help prevent hiking stick wear-through. I'll have to hold on sail suggestions till I have a chance to try out my new set. ![]() |
