Post subject: | How to install new H17 wing tramps |
Hi, I recently purchased a Hobie 17 which I'm bringing back to life. The wing tramps needed replacement, and I've acquired a new mesh set. There is a cross-bar on the wing frame which prevents removal of old and installation of new, and its fitting appears to be riveted in place. Do I need to drill out the rivets, then reattach with machine screws? Or do I just need two strong people to help spread them apart and have it pop out of that casting? If the latter, any tricks or tips I should consider? Thank you, Chris |

No rivet removal required. The center bar is held in by the flex of the frame. You have to flex it open to pop one end off a casting, the slide out of the pocket. Insert one leg into the boat. Pull away with the opposite leg to flex it open. |

Keep in mind that sliding the tramp around the bends of the frame tube and over the aluminum castings can be quite difficult, especially if the tramp is old and the material has gotten stiff. If you don't plan on saving the old tramps, you may find it easier to just cut them off of the frames. sm |

if Vinyl, I don't have experience with the mesh. Very tight to get the new one on. Its a two person job. |

Here's one I learned from a medical professional. I was struggling to get mine on and they ask if I ever used water based lube. I know. Sounds funny. I went to walmart bought their cheep brand , a couple of bucks, and headed back to the beach. I was a little sheepish about rubbing it on in public but..those old hard mesh wing covers slip right on. Just use plenty. Best part is when you put it in the water, it washes right off. |
