Hi All, Anyone here with experience in replacing the trapeze wire to 3mm Dyneema? My current wire has some rust coming and needs to be shortened too. Thought it might be an idea to go for Dyneema. //Mats |

I haven't actually replaced trapeze wire with dyneema, but I've done other wire replacements (sprit lines, shrouds...). There's no down side. With that small of a diameter line, though, splicing will be a little difficult but Brummel eye splices will work. Personally, I'd use uncovered line and replace every 2-3 years...if you want them to last longer, you can use covered line, but that just makes the splices a little harder. You could talk to your rigger if you have one or go to APSLTD.com and talk to their riggers, they'll do the splices for you if you aren't experienced. |

3 mm Dyneema is a 12 strand single braid - there is no cover. Splices are super easy - lots of YouTube videos. The line is about 1/3 the cost of stainless steel wire rope, so even if you make a mistake, it's no big deal. There are two downsides: - Dyneema will chafe and break without warning. You need to have some sort of chafe protection at the tang attachment and anywhere the line will touch the mast (about the first 10 cm of line). Heat shrink tubing will work. This is a major safety consideration on a single-handed boat like the Hobie 17. You'll end up in the water and the boat will sail away from you. - Dyneema will creep under load (slowly stretch) and after a while, the trap line will be longer than you want. You can either get heat-stretched Dyneema ($$) or just plan to make the lines a few cm shorter. |
