Post subject:  Main sail repair

Bought my dream boat this fall (1995 17 sport), and got to take it out a few times before it got cold here in Michigan. However, the main sails are clearly tired. The sweet squaretop main is a lost cause, but I was curious if anyone has had any luck repairing the original sail? There are two rips, around 10'' in length. there appears to be a middle layer of cloth sandwiched by the laminate that could probably be sewn to, but I am not sure if it is heavy enough to support a repair. Figured I would ask if it is even possible before I buy supplies. Really, I am looking for a cheap option to sail through next summer, and hopefully save up to buy a nice new sail.

Or, maybe some of the racers out there have some beater sails laying around they part with? (Yes, I made a separate WTB classifieds post)

Thanks guys!

If the original fabric is delaminated (clear film separated from base fabric) then it is probably not worth repairing.

If the base material is otherwise in good condition, then it could potentially be repaired. Without seeing the location and orientation of the tear, it’s hard to provide much feedback on a suggested repair process. Much of the repair method would depend on how the loads in the sail need to flow through the damaged area. Probably best to have an experienced sailmaker take a look.
