Is anyone heading up an effort in the H-17 class to get approval for more affordable and more durable class-legal sail options? :?:

Not that I’m aware of. Given the history of the class association, I think it is highly unlikely that any significant changes would be approved.

I hear you on the affordability aspect, the OEM sails are quite pricey. But as far as durability is concerned, I think the more recent sails do last quite well. The original 1980’s sails were very susceptible to delamination, but the more recent sails seem to hold up well. My 2006 sail has been raced every year that I’ve owned it and still does well at the regional level. It is just starting to show some small areas of delam. I just wish that Hobie would use a more robust tack grommet and back it up with a sewn 1” nylon webbing reinforcement strap since those grommets have been known to fail.

We no longer build the H17 or H20 sails, so another option has to be approved.

See the link in Class Racing RE: Hobie 17, 18, and Tiger NAs at Lake Perry. H17 are allowed to use Whirlwind pin top with same dimensions as OEM sail. I guess I sold my 17 two years too soon.... because the sail issue.
