Post subject:  Old/new Hobie mast and shrouds discrepancy?

I am new member, former H16 racer, and I now have a 1984 Hobie 14 I am restoring. I was graciously given a parts boat (appears to be a pre-1973 model) to get me on my way, and I've run into a little snag. Here are my questions:

Did Hobie change H14 shroud length at some point? The newer mast does not fit on the newer boat using the older boat's shrouds (the forestay seems to be too short). I have no "newer boat" shrouds to compare the old ones to.

Did Hobie change the mast tang location at some point? The newer mast's
tang appears to be about an inch higher up the mast then that on the
older mast. There is also what looks like some sort of metal tape
beneath the tang on the newer boat's mast...at a lower location (close
to where the older boat's tang is located). I am trying to figure out if
this is the corret spot or if the previous owner may have relocated the
tang higher up on the newer mast. The little hook for the main sail
halyard has this same metal tape as well (I'll have to check and see if this is "moved" when compared to the older mast).

The older boat is a non-turbo and the newer one is an incomplete turbo. for the time being I am planning on running it as a non-turbo. Is there any other difference bewteen the boats that would cause the discrepancy between the non-turbo shrouds and the turbo boat and mast?

Thanks guys! I'd like to order new rigging soon, and don't want ot end up with the wrong ones. I'm looking forward to some discussions and sailing the little Hobie!

Jeff

Simple answer... Yes. The wires changed in 1982. Shorter shrouds, longer forestay.

Wow, knowing that would have helped me a great deal when some bastard stole my mast. I could not figure why the shrouds and new mast did not seem to line up.

Did they change the tang location as well? The two are definitely not at the same location. Newer are higher?

No change in tang location that I am aware of.

Old discussion but could this be the reason I am having problems connecting the wires on my c.1978 Hobie 14 since I replaced my shrouds but not my mainstay? Probably???

Thanks,
Betsy

you got it, if you got stock Hobie shrouds the forstay, and maybe the bridles, need to be changed as well.

You may be having problems because the turbo and non-turbo have way different bridle lengths. Also the forestay is longer on the turbo and shorter on the non-turbo. The forestay and bridles need to be both turbo or both non-turbo.

The original non turbo had a tall bridle. The turbo had a shorter bridle so there was more room for the jib.

What's weird is that I am switching the standing rigging from one boat to another.... and it fits fine on one and not on the other. The non-turbo rigging fits fine on the older model boat and mast (non-turbo boat) but it doesn't fit on the newer turbo boat and mast. I can't see what the discrepancy is, but the forstay ends up being too short on the newer, "originally turbo" boat.

It shouldn't make a difference, right?

May be related to forward cross bar bend. You can measure from the decks to the mast step on both boats to see a difference. Turbo 14s came with a dolphin striker as standard equipment. Older boats may have flatter forward crossbars. Coming from the older boat to one that has always had a striker could see the step higher / wires seem shorter.

Are you at the top of the bridle chain plate?

Post subject:

It wont reach the top of the chainplate on the turbo. It misses by about an inch or two. All the hardware is identical between the two... only the boats are different

Add a 2nd chainplate.

I could get a 10 pin plate or something like that. I know there are some work arounds, but I was trying to find out exactly why the shroud set works on one boat and not on the other
