Post subject:  Would you pay $250 for this?
* 1977 H14 with trailer

* Sort of a burnt-yellow color. (Decks, hulls, tramp.)
* Relatively new non-factory mainsail that looks to be in very good shape.
* Missing one drain plug
* One new rudder (presumably the other is original.)
* One soft spot on port hull about 24" ahead of rudder approx. 14"x14"

Whaddaya think? Good cheap project boat? I figure if I clean it up real good, fix the soft spot, and maybe paint it and the trailer I could sell it for a profit next year. I mean the trailer is probably worth $250 by itself, and a like-new mainsail isn't cheap either. Am I on the right track?

Mebbe I could put a roller-furling jib and a single trap wire on it too. Thoughts / comments?

Seriously sounds like a deal, Jim.

The 14 I restored last summer was $600 w/trailer. Put about $2K into her by the time I was done. Most of that was new tramp / sail.

Hulls were solid, though. I'd be worried a bit about the soft spot.

Dude, I could swear you are describing the 14 that I sold at the end of summer last year. I got $500 for it without a trailer. Had the same soft spot, and turbo rig minus the jib and blocks (trapeze, turbo tramp, and furler).

:) If CINCHOUSE (my GF) approves, I'll go pick it up tomorrow. Plenty of pics to see then. I figure doing the "soft spot" repair as so often described in this forum will take care of it. If not then I can get a $10 inspection port and put it back there and lay a layer or two of glass on the inside of the hull with maybe a small piece of lumber for support.

Tramp looks okay except for being dirty. When I first went to look at it I was like "awww... one of the rudders is broken." The second time I drove by I was like "whaaaa? No broken rudder? Maybe I saw wrong?" So I stopped in to ask and the guy was like "Put a new one on yesterday." So that's $100 right there... I really think this is a gonga deal. :shock:

Edit: Wish it had a turbo rig. Hobie catalog price is about $150 + cost of a jib. Guess I could just wait for a jib to show up on ebay. ;)

My girlfriend wants to paint it. I said okay, so I think she might be onboard. lol

Here is the (like) new sail. It's a little dirty but looks great! Must not be a class sail because there are no numbers.

Anyway, I'm gonna pressure-wash the boat tomorrow or Sunday and then take it out on the lake to see how it feels. Then I'll fix the soft spot in the hull and probably replace the standing rigging, too. (Not immediately, but soon.) It's got cracking plastic covering on it so I can't really inspect it too well. I stepped the mast there before I left with it and it went quite smoothly. BOY the 14 mast is really light compared to the 16 mast! Wow! I was surprised.

When I get it cleaned up and get a picture of me on the water expect a new sig. :)

Okay, just to place that in a global perspective:

I just sold an older H16 (79000) in good condition, trailer etc for just under $3k NZD (New Zealand Dollars). Standard rate for 1980's H16's here is NZD2.5k to NZD3k. For a good older H14 is about NZD1.5k, complete with trailer etc. I picked up an H14 just like your's recently for NZD650 though, will resell after some work for 1.5k

1 USD = 0.72 NZD

So sounds like you're doing well over there, old-hobie-wise ;0)
