I am thinking of selling my Hobie 14, and I would like feedback on what price I should ask: The boat is a 1983 with the 6 batten Carumba sail (no tears, no repairs, crisp with less than 50 days of use). It was originally a turbo, so it has the dolphin striker and 1 trapeze setup. The tramp is from the early 90’s and in good condition with the hiking straps still in place. I replaced all of the rigging with 1/8 stainless wire from saltydog 1 month ago. Overall, there is no work needed on the boat, and I just reglassed the bottoms of the hulls with West Marine epoxy this fall. The hulls have only light surface cracks, no repairs, and no soft spots. The boat comes with a 1983 galvanized trailer (new rims/tires, wiring, and bearings) and a pair of cat trax. What should I ask? Any advice as to how I should list the boat (ebay, hobie.com, thebeachcats.com)? I am located in located in Pittsburgh, but am willing to drive a few hours. I am only selling her, because I have acquired a Hobie 16. Thanks for your help... JAH |

What are the last two digits of the serial number? These indicate the year of manufacture. It should have adjustable upper rudder castings if it is an 83. I am looking for an 84 or newer with straight rudder arms and red glue seam on the deck edge. cheers Bill |

Thanks for the advice, guys. For $90, I should consider recycling all of the aluminum on the little champ and see what the local beer distributor will pay. Does anyone know the most recent price per pound on aluminum?! I heard that scrap prices are way up... Bill: The boat is a 1983 with the serial number being CCMC2026M838. The rudder arms are straight and not adjustable. I found this picture of similar arms. My 16 is an '84, so I know this red seam about which you speak. The 14 does not have it.

Maybe your boat doesn't have the original rudder system on it. Anyway put it up on ebay. I just saw an 83 (that was supposed to be an 84) turbo go for 2 grand with a trailer. The auction started at $600. It was a nice boat but really. cheers Bill |

Bill or others: My 16 has adjustable upper rudder castings, but my 14 has fixed/non-adjustable upper rudder castings. Can or should I switch these before selling the 14? You seemed to be concerned about the adjustable upper castings. The rudder system has worked great on the 14, and I have never adjusted those on the 16. Hmmm... Jeffrey |

If the original rudder castings work well, then leave them alone. Nobody but a hard-core racer is going to care about it, or even notice them. Besides, new upper castings will set you back about $140 each. 
There's a retro-fit kit you can buy to convert the old style - it's about $60 as I recall. The photo you show above is old style castings (identifiable by the rivet hole on the side) and bent tiller arms. Straight tiller arms are absolutely straight. |

We were just playing around, bro. I got a major deal on my H14 for $250, but if yours is in good shape you should be able to get $500+ for it.

Boat apparently is (was?) registered in PA according to the #'s on the bow. The square sticker to the right of the "usless FIL's" leg looks like one of the use permits that PA makes you buy to go boating on their inland lakes. The background location looks suspiciously like Lake Erie, given the other info. |

You are indeed correct. We, my fiance and I, sail the boat on lake erie. I go to medical school in Pittsburgh, but her parents have a place on the lake in Erie, PA. |
