Post subject:  HC14: how many knots to safely land while running?

Hi friends,

When the wind blows toward the beach, to come back, it seems easy to run toward the beach and land over it while running (or broad reaching if the wind is not exaclty perpendicular to the beach).

However once the cat has landed, if the wind really blows, I fear it could pitchpole just over the beach, since the sail is still full of wind.

I was wondering what is the aproximate maximum wind (knots) I can do this manouver safely.

Thanks in advance,
Fabio - Italy

Post subject:  Landing on the beach

I am assuming that you have a beach of sand, not a beach of logs, stumps, and boulders like we do here that you need to dodge :?:

I think you would have to hit the beach under some hellacious wind to pitchpole on it. Any beach sailor will confirm this. Just get your weight back as you come onto the beach and spin the boat head to wind ASAP to keep the sails from chafing on the stays if for no other reason

Better yet, if waves are not a concern, spin the boat BEFORE you get to the beach and pull it onshore stern first.

Just my 2 cents  Have a Hobie Day!
