Almost the entire port deck was soft, so today I decided to do the repair. That's everything ahead of the front pylon (to within about 2" of the hull/deck joint) and everything rear of the aft pylon. I had 3 syringes of waterproof epoxy, I figured that'd be enough but BOY WAS I WRONG. Ultimately I had to go to Lowe's to get more glue and I decided I didn't want to spend 18 x $3 for more epoxy. I thought "Well, Gorilla Glue is polyurethane, just like the boat..." so I bought a big bottle of that. Much easier to work with than the epoxy, but BOY it became a pain in the ass because it started foaming and coming back out all the little holes. All in all, I can now definately see the benefit of getting the super-thin "Git Rot" epoxy for a delam repair job. Don't be like me and use Gorilla Glue, if you were thinking about it. Tomorrow after it's cured, I'll let you know how the deck feels. LOL |

Since you took the 14 out I guess the gorilla glue worked. Is it solid? Todd |

Hm. No, not really solid. I don't think it dries/cures as hard as epoxy. It's MUCH firmer than it was, but it's not hard like I would like. Plus, after I went home for the night it foamed out the holes more, so there are these big, hard blobs all over the deck that I'll need to sand off. Alas. Well, if further soft spots develop I'll use epoxy for those. *sigh*

60 minutes of sanding later, much of most of the foam blobs is (are?) gone, but some remains. *sigh* Don't try teh Gorilla Glue method.

You gotta buy epoxy by the quart for delamination repairs. My first delamination repair used about a pint for a soft spot about 2 feet long. Next season the other hull delaminated, so that used most the rest of it up. I have about a cup left. And don't use small syringes-10cc or less. |

My friend was going to give me a gallon of his expired epoxy from his airplane project (Long-EZ) for this but he got busy (wife had a baby) and forgot. OH WELL. |

Jamie, I drove into Angelo Saturday and I dropped off the spare rudder. I was going to drop it by the apartment, but I forgot the address and I also remembered that the big date was this weekend. I took the rudder out to the boat and put it on the tramp. I hope it will do for now. Just remember that the holes are drilled for a 18. Let me know if you can get together next weekend (June 4-5) to blast across some lake. 
I see that you might have a little work ahead of you with the Gorilla glue.

We'll be up here in Abilene next weekend if you want to head up to Phantom Hill. Maybe on Saturday afternoon or Sunday? Saturday morning Ming and I are volunteering at the zoo for some kind of fundraiser. Hopefully the WX will be improving. Thanks again for the rudder! You da man.

Guys, I need to do a small repair as well. I have built several airplanes and fiberglass is not new to me. What epoxy would you recommend. West? etc...... Dewey |
